MEDUSA (Med-USA) SEVEN DAY COURSE:

The MedUSA 7 day course is a unique collaboration between doctors, medical school administrators and medical students, designed to provide an insight into medicine and the preparation necessary to make a successful application to College and medical school. The aim of MedUSA is to make a genuine difference. Through a rich blend of lectures, workshops and clinical sessions, the purpose of the course is to inform, prepare and motivate young men and women who want a career in medicine. If you are considering becoming a doctor then Medusa is the course for you.

Medusa offers a complete experience for the prospective premed and future medical student. The conference is available to students who are aged 16 or over at the time of the conference. Below is a summary of MedUSA's major features, all of which are included as part of the course:

MEDUSA PRE-CONFERENCE SUPPORT:

  • MEDUSA INFORMATION: full conference information will be sent to every Medusa delegate. Details will also include your personal login data that will allow you to unlock many of the Medusa pre-conference presentations mentioned below.
  • ONLINE NOTICE BOARD offering advice, information and the opportunity to meet and make new friends and even arrange to share rides before you arrive at Medusa. PLEASE NOTE: NOTICEBOARD REGISTRATION IS A SEPARATE PROCESS FROM YOUR PRE-CONFERENCE ACCOUNT LOGIN.
  • PRE-CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT MATERIAL: Medusa has a great deal to offer, to prepare you to make the most of your time we provide a rich selection of pre-conference materials. Specifically there will be a number of online presentations and information sources that you will unlock using your personal login details, to be sent with your MedUSA pre-conference information.
    Please note that many of the pre-conference materials can be viewed once you have your Medusa personal login details to be sent with your pre-conference details.

MEDUSA CONFERENCE:

  • PRESENTATIONS superb presentations: lectures given by experienced professionals whose focus is to provide the tools for successful preparation and application to both pre-med and medical school, with subjects that range from grade improvement to school selection. This includes a section on the new 7-year degree courses that allow students to bypass the MCAT process.
  • INTERVIEW WORKSHOPS specially designed to enhance and support your pre-med application and interview preparation.
  • MEDICAL STUDENTS will be available to answer your questions and concerns.
  • PRACTICAL SESSIONS covering a range of hands-on practicals with the focus on cardiology, ophthalmology and the use of the otoscope and other clinical tools for examination and diagnosis. This session is supported by the interactive model on the free MedUSA CD and in pre-conference materials.
  • PATIENT CONTACT Even more importantly, you have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of the profession, by working in a clinical environment, fully supported by trained personnel. During the courses, you encounter a host of practical techniques and obtain certification that will support and enhance your future applications. .
  • EMERGENCY ROOM is MedUSA's specially designed simulation of a busy emergency room, where you will work in teams in real time to make diagnosis and manage resources. This session is supported by pre-conference resources.
  • PARENT SESSIONS offering a variety of presentations ranging from finance to supporting your son or daughter's future application to medical school. Coupled with the opportunity to talk direct to admission tutors
  • LIVE SURGERY offers a unique opportunity to witness and hear direct from the surgical team as they prep and operate. Background information will be provided as part of the pre-conference information to allow you to obtain the most from the surgery that you will be observing.
  • EXPERIENCE CAMPUS LIFE for yourself before you actually apply to university. This is a valuable experience for all prospective students and is not to be missed.
  • SOCIAL ACTIVITIES designed to ensure that you have every opportunity to make new friends from amongst the young people who you may be living and working alongside during pre-med and at medical school.
  • FREE STETHOSCOPE [Note that this includes training in use during an associated practical session, including support from the Medusa CD]

MEDUSA POST CONFERENCE SUPPORT:

  • PERSONAL WEB SPACE will be provided for all MedUSA students post-conference. Guided by the information provided at MedUSA, students will have the opportunity to build their own online academic portfolio. Links to additional materials that are either bought or provided free by MedUSA will be uploaded to the student's own personal space. Full details will be given at MedUSA.
  • OPPORTUNITIES ABROAD in Romania or India working with the Medusa supported charities for children, Full details will be given at MedUSA.
  • MEDICAL STUDENT BLOGS are the daily online diaries of a number of medical students from a range of medical schools coming soon!
  • PODCASTS will be available later in the year when you will be able to download and listen to medical students and others talk on a range of topics of interest to the prospective pre-med and medical student.
  • ONLINE NOTICE BOARD support 24/7 for as long as you require.
  • Medusa NEWSLETTERS containing the latest news and information to anyone interested in topics that range from medical school application to recent advances in medicine and medical education, will be available later in the year. ( Click here to join the mailing list.)
  • NEW MEDUSA SERVICES will be available later in the year, many of these services will be free and will utilise the very latest technology to provide you with personalised information to support your application and more.

THE EXTRAS

Whilst MedUSA offers a fully comprehensive course for the prospective medical student, there are several options that you can undertake, at no extra cost to supplement your course. We offer the following modules:

  • RAPID RESPONSE LIFE SUPPORT: this is a unique opportunity open to all attending MEDUSA to gain an experience of immense personal and professional value to a future doctor. This training will allow you to genuinely make a difference should you find yourself with anyone who requires resuscitation from heart attack through to drowning, electrocution trauma or drug overdose. All who successfully pass this section will be presented with a certificate of attendance during the Medusa award ceremony.
  • St GEORGE'S MEDUSA SUMMER MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIP: open to all attending MEDUSA, St. George’s University, Grenada, will be holding a competition during the MedUSA conference, and the winners of this competition will be awarded a scholarship to attend the exciting ten day Camp Medicine in Grenada, West Indies.
  • EUROPE FOR MEDUSA GRADUATES : all MedUSA graduates will be invited to be guests of the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. During dates to be arranged, students will be escorted to the beautiful city of Prague, to be housed in university accommodation (see the brochure for further details).
