Generating Genius

The Aims
This three-year project aims to encourage higher standards of educational achievement amongst black and minority ethnic groups, in particular 11-14 year old African Caribbean boys by improving pupils’ motivation and self-esteem through the study and learning of medicine, science and the arts. This group has the lowest achievement overall of all ethnic groups.

This project is unique in its development of a social and academic programme delivered through a 4-week residential summer school in partnership with the University of West Indies (UWI) and links with a number of medical schools. Black boys will be exposed to professional black role models such as doctors and forensic scientists and be offered a high quality professional arts experience using poets, artists and performers. The project intends to be part of a whole school approach to study support. It begins with 7th Grade boys and they will travel to Jamaica every summer for 3 years.

There is a need to address the needs of African Caribbean boys:

• Early in their lives
• Provide them with real skills to navigate school and their peer group
• To significantly tackle low aspiration
• To provide an experiential learning experience that will impact their lives
• To give them a critical mass of positive Black role models

Medusa Romania Appeal

LIM Xpo runs LIM’s Overseas Volunteer Program.

The LIM Xpo team and everyone involved are committed to improving the lives of disadvantaged children all over the world, we do this with the help of students like you who have the passion and conviction to join us and work on our projects. Volunteering with LIM Xpo will give you the experience of a lifetime and will be invaluable for your future career in the health sector as well as to the children you will be helping. Everyone who has visited our projects since 2001 has made strong bonds and friendships with the children, staff and of course their fellow volunteers. Our greatest testimony is that most of our volunteers return as often as they can and those who can’t make it back still keep in touch. Please see the below list of projects that we run:

OUR PROJECTS IN SLATINA, ROMANIA
* Casa Luminii Day Care Centre cares for 30 special needs children who come to the Centre from government institutions on a daily basis.
* The Government Down Town Homes accommodate 12 special needs children who have serious mental and physical damage caused by a combination of birth defects and a lack of love and care.
* Bals Children’s Home is one of only a few Government Orphanages still open in Romania; there are 120 children all with varying needs and abilities.
* The 5 Government homes in Caracal have a total of approximately 30 special needs children who have varying mental and physical capabilities who require love, care and attention.

ROMANIAN PROJECTS STARTING IN 2008
* The Respite Care Home is purpose built to take children out of their government accommodation for 10 days at a time allowing for intensive treatment, attention and love. Construction will be completed in 2008.
* There is a program in Danceu, Turnu Severin, an impoverished Romany village with hundreds of children, which delivers education and stimulation to the amazing children. Volunteer trips will start in 2008.

OUR PROJECTS IN INDIA
Our trips to India are for a minimum of 3 weeks and incorporate the following 4 projects in and around Goa: Lighthouse Children’s Home for abandoned children, the Mother Theresa home for babies, Dammaden house for children with HIV/AIDs and the Goan Medical Centre.
